Beyond Expectation: Non-normative Representations of Muslims in Film

Tuesday, April 12, 2016 -
6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The Markaz: Resource Center (Nitery 211)

This Markaz film series aims to challenge normative representations of Islam and Muslims. Rather than focusion on expected themes-of violence, oppression, and extremism- these films capture the everyday texture of life in a variety of Middle Eastern contexts. A woman mysteriously disappears on a picnic in northern Iran; a group of Lebanese beauticians rely on each other as they deal with everyday problems; an Iraqi physician stuggles to reconcile his hope for a democratic future with the human cost of war--these are some of themes that emerge in this film series.
