Just a Piece of Cloth: Women and the Hijab | A Chai Chat with Dr. Rosemary Henze

Thursday, March 9, 2017 - 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
The Markaz: Resource Center (Nitery 211)

What stereotypes are perpetuated by the mainstream media about Muslim women? What does the hijab mean to women who choose to wear it, and how does it affect their daily lives? How have women pushed back the dominant American narrative of what it means to be Muslim? Join us for a screening of Just a Piece of Cloth and discussion with Director and Producer Dr. Rosemary Henze. Dinner will be provided.

Dr. Rosemary Henze is a Professor of Linguistics and Language Development at San Jose State University. She has written a number of scholarly books and articles on the concept of race in America and how language enacts power relations. The stories she heard from some of her female Muslim students motivated the filming of Just a Piece of Cloth to challenge and complicate dominant stereotypes.
